Ms. Clester from Leachville AR is requesting lab equipment through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

White Light Delight

My students need twenty-five prisms they can individually use to study the visible electromagnetic spectrum in order to discover that white light is made up of color.

My Students

Our school's upper elementary is comprised of 5th and 6th grade students of which a large percentage are bilingual and are on free and reduced lunches. Nevertheless, students are entering the classroom with high expectations of learning something new while having fun doing it. In the coming Spring, students will be state assessment ready and hopefully have developed a deeper appreciation for science.

There is a need to expose my students to real-world applications through physical science.

In order for students to accomplish this, they need the proper equipment to carry out specific investigations. Students will learn that all electromagnetic radiation is light, but they can only see a small portion of this radiation we call visible light. Students learning that the full visible spectrum traveling through prisms will separate white light into the rainbow colors.

My Project

The prisms that I am requesting will benefit all of my traditional and non-traditional students alike. Students will be able to demonstrate competencies in directing white light (from the Sun) through prisms associated with projects, investigations, and experiments that they could not do with out prisms. Not only will this encourage greater knowledge of the visible electromagnetic spectrum, they will also be able to work collaboratively, discovering the colors in white light as they are projected in a specific order. This hands-on project will greatly increase students' knowledge of the visible spectrum.

Your generous donation to our project will improve our 5th and 6th grade science classrooms by helping to provide greater knowledge of our physical world.
