Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
By the end of the school year, I desire a culturally responsive classroom built by the students, where they are encouraged and welcomed to discover, explore, and engage with one another as a community, providing them with the opportunity to express their ideas and opinions.
A large percentage of my students are English language learners, in which English is their second language.
Several of them are bilingual and speak both Spanish and English. Our elementary school is located in a low income community and is in desperate need of reconstruction, since it was built during the 1950s. Due to budget cuts and minimal financial support, our students lack the sufficient resources they need to excel academically.
My Project
My students need 40 white boards and erasers for classroom activities. I desire for my 4th grade students to gather together and work collaboratively in groups and as an entire classroom. The individual whiteboards and erasers will encourage participation and allow them to engage in several academic activities.
Students will greatly benefit from their own individual whiteboard, particularly in mathematics. The white boards will be utilized during math games, as well as, math talks with the entire classroom. Students can work together to solve specific mathematical problems and utilize the white boards to express their work.
With the addition of individual white boards and erasers, my 4th grade students will be able to practice their social skills in groups and as an entire classroom, demonstrating each others work.
They will participate in games and activities that will require the use of the materials.
