White Boards for Independent Practice During Whole-Group Instruction

My students need individual 9”x12” dry erase white boards that they may use on their laps during instruction. They also need a supply of black dry erase markers.

My Students

First grade is an amazing year of tremendous academic growth. Many students enter first grade reading just simple words (consonant-vowel-consonant words or words with beginning blends), but by spring they can really read! My students learn in a hands-on environment, and we share the joy of learning.

My school is a public school in our local school district.

We are not a DoDEA school, but most of our students come from military families, as we are located in military housing near the Naval Postgraduate School.

My Project

Guided practice and independent practice are important components to whole-group instruction.

When my first graders come to the carpet for a lesson, they bring their white board, which they will use throughout the lesson. I use these daily for both Language Arts and Math. Our old set has been used for four years and are scratched and have some holes in the finish. We’re ready for a fresh set!

During instruction, I teach and demonstrate, and then students practice on their own white board while I guide and supervise and correct. Personal white boards are one of my favorite teaching tools!
