Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 7th grade math at a high-need, at-risk, predominately Spanish speaking college prep middle/high school. We have students from 6th grade through 12th grade. I have three math classes where I teach 3rd and 4th grade math skills to 7th grade students while teaching them the 7th grade standards. My goal is to have them reach grade level by the end of this school year.
Even though this is a college prep school, most of my students are way below grade level and they need all of the extra help and support possible to bridge the gap so that college can be an attainable dream.
Our seventh grade is comprised of 75 amazing students, many of whom come from bilingual households. Their goal is not only to make it to college but to finish college as well.
My Project
My students use their whiteboards every day to do math problems and their whiteboards are so dirty. All of the 7th grade students at my school participated in a Khan Academy math competition and we were in the top 10. We used part of the money for erasers and whiteboard markers and we are going to use the rest for board cleaners.
We won a $500 grant from Khan Academy Learn Storm and my students are thrilled that we are getting whiteboard cleaner.
I am so happy that they can get a little bottle of cleaner so that they can have a nice clean board to do even more math problems. Thank you Khan Academy!!!
