I am a second grade Special Education teacher at PS 181 in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. My school is a Title I school and approximately 84% of its students receive free lunch. Throughout the school year, I use music in the classroom to inspire and motivate my students. We have played Mathematical Musical Chairs and listened to School House Rocks' "Multiplication Rocks" to practice our math facts. During Black History Month, we studied the Harlem Renaissance and listened to pieces by Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Ella Fitzgerald. During independent work time, I play classical music, which both calms and motivates my students. And, on occasions when the class has had an exceptional day, we play a few rounds of Freeze Dance. I do not have a CD player in my classroom. Several times a week, I borrow one from a teacher in a neighboring classroom. On occasion, I need to alter the course of a lesson because the CD player is already in use. As a Special Education teacher, one of my main objectives is to make the curriculum fully accessible to all learners. One way to enable this success is to create a multi-sensory environment where student inspiration and motivation is fostered. A CD player would be a wonderful way to reach the auditory learners in my classroom.
