My students need whisper phones to help them become fluent readers. We also need items for the prize box to help keep students motivated to work hard and behave appropriately.
I teach in a low-income, culturally diverse school where the students often come with traumatic experiences. Our district has over 60 different languages!
That being said, they are an amazing bunch of kids and one of them will be your doctor or lawyer some day.
I am trying to level the playing field for these kiddos by giving them an education equivalent to their private school counter parts. I work hard every day to give them the best education possible.
Student behaviors have changed dramatically in the past 20 years. Many of my students come to school with trauma or multiple traumas. This affects their brains and their ability to learn and to behave. Imagine always being in flight or fight mode. This can also make managing student behaviors a challenge.
My Project
Whisper phones help children become fluent, smooth readers because they can read into the phone and hear themselves. To improve fluency students need to read the same thing over and over, out loud. With a whisper phone, students can hear themselves without bothering others.
I hand out PAW tickets to students who are doing the right thing; sometimes, that's all it takes to get the whole class to focus.
My students want PAW tickets because I have a drawing each Friday and they LOVE the drawing. I pull 5 tickets and each ticket pulled, allows a student to come up and pick out a prize. We are in desperate need of items for the prize box! This prize box drawing really helps me manage student behaviors in a postive way.
