The school where I work is Title I. 100% of the students receive free and reduced-price lunch. Over 60% of students are Hispanic. One-third of those are classified as English Language Learners. My school struggles to keep up with other schools in the more affluent part of town. The staff at my school works hard to provide the best academic experience for the students.
The students here are genuinely interested in being successful.
Everyday I am impressed with the hard work the children put forth to do well in school. My goal is to help them achieve all they can by providing them with the resources necessary to thrive. As the school librarian, I support the classroom teachers in their effort to promote literacy.
As the school librarian, I support the classroom teachers in their effort to promote literacy. I would like to have 2 seats of whisper phones and some comfy seats. Students use whisper phones when they are reading books. A whisper phone looks like a phone receiver. The students will hold one up to their ears and speak into the mouthpiece. This isolates the sound of their voice so they can clearly hear the words they are reading aloud. It also encourages students to read aloud in a quiet voice.
When students are beginning readers, they tend to read books aloud in their speaking voice and this is not conducive for a classroom of 20 or more students.
Whisper phones cause the readers to lower the volume of their speaking voices. The Comfy Floor seats allow for flexible seating around the library room. Students can take the seat to a quiet place in the room and read for their learning and pleasure.
