As a teacher in a lower-income school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. With so many challenges, it is important to keep our learning environment exciting and engaging.
At times, my eager learners struggle to stay focused on our lessons.
They like to move, they love to read, and love lots of positive attention. Many of the students are being raised in nontraditional households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. With our families having these additional financial struggles, it is not possible to ask for extra donations for our learning environment. Often my students have very hectic days without any consistency. When these students come to me, I do my very best to keep a predictable routine. Through this routine the students can be successful and find academic excellence.
My Project
Everyday my students work on their reading skills. Often, students will read in pairs or at the guided reading table. Having sets of Whiperphones helps increase reading engagement and makes things more fun. Using Whisperphones allows students to clearly hear themselves read.
When my students use the Whisperphones they are strengthening more than just their reading skills.
They are learning to share, take turns and work together. Students are involved and making connections to the story.
The six person Whisperphone allows the teacher can listen for accuracy, expression and then can give corrections discreetly. The teacher can move the dial to listen to all, one or pairs of students. The Whisperphones help make reading more exciting!
