My students are in Kindergarten through Fifth grade with a range of learning disabilities including Specific Learning Disabilities, ADHD, Autism Spectrum, Health Impairments, Developmental Disabilities, Language Impairments and Intellectual Disabilities. They attend a public school in rural Idaho.
Despite many challenges, my students are eager to learn and do their best.
My students struggle with not only academic areas such as math, reading and writing, but they also have behavioral and social concerns. My students aren't conventional learners. For kids with special needs, the right materials can make a huge difference in the classroom.
My Project
Fluency in reading is very important, as it helps foster comprehension. Our students don't know what good reading sounds like so they struggle when making meaning out of words they can read.
Children who tend to feel embarrassed or even ashamed of reading aloud may find more joy and excitement in it when using a whisper phone to aid their speech, fluency and comprehension.
Whisper phones can help young struggling readers gain confidence in their reading ability as they master new skills. They allow students the opportunity to hear themselves as they read. This helps students build phonemic awareness. We use the phones for activities such as blending and identifying sounds.
Beginning level books will accompany the whisper phones. The students will be able to choose a book and whisper read away with confidence!
Bouncy chair bands strap to a desk so students can stretch their feet back and forth while sitting. They can help students stay engaged in lessons. It is a great movement outlet for overactive, frustrated or anxious students. Fidget toys are effective in improving concentration and focus in students with ADHD.
Lastly, because I teach many students from several different classrooms, I am asking for Clorox wipes to sanitize the whisper phones and fidget toys.
