New band students shouldn't have to share! With the beginning band program my 5th and 6th grade students are eagerly awaiting the new school year and their chance to learn. They will be so much more successful with their own instrument to practice with!
I am blessed to have hard working students, but I cannot deny that our school is high poverty and has a high percentage of English Language Learners.
It is very difficult for parents to provide rental instruments, and so students are forced to chose a cheaper instrument (flute, clarinet, and trombone) or won't participate in band at all. By providing school rentals for some of the more exotic instruments like saxophone I can better balance the sound of the band and serve more students. My students have already shown the will to learn, please help to give them a way!
My Project
I am requesting one student model alto saxophone. I can only imagine how excited my students will be to see instruments that have not been hot glued together and are not covered in another person's teeth marks! These 5th and 6th graders will have the opportunity to spend more time practicing as individuals and they will learn to increase their own responsibility in bringing their instrument to and from school. Additionally, I will have more time to plan for them because I won't have to spend so much time sanitizing the few school instruments that we do have.
Tone color is the first musical preference.
A child knows from a very early age which timbres appeal to him or her. By providing more instruments in the band program, I will give more students the chance to fall in love with playing instead of being forced onto the cheapest option.
