I teach 1st grade at Liberty Elementary in Liberty, Mississippi. All of my students receive free lunches. As a matter of fact, all of the Liberty Elementary students receive free lunches. We come from an extremely poor school district. Many of our students are members of single parent, welfare homes. Outside the classroom, my students do not have much to be excited about. That is why I need your help. I want to make our classroom as comfortable as a home. I want it to be a safe haven where my students can learn what a loving, nurturing environment has to offer. By experiencing this, I hope that they will remember and grow up to do the same for their own children. However, I am having difficulties with having my "own" materials for my classroom. The reading program my school adopted requires that a 5 minute video is shown twice a day. The problem is, my assistant has to leave the class, walk down the hall, check out a T.V. and V.C.R. and an overhead projector each time we use it. Yes, each time, not daily. If we need it for science or social studies (which I do quite often), my assistant has to repeat the process. This not only takes time away from my students' learning, it is chaotic on classroom management. Having our own equipment will allow my assistant and I to utilize our time more effectively and efficiently in the classroom. Also, I would love to have a class digital camera that I can print pictures from for making books, holiday cards, field trips, etc. Some of my students have never been exposed to a digital camera and I feel it would be great for them to experience. It's hard to maintain the "comforts of home" when you have to borrow, borrow, borrow. I feel like George in the cartoon. I don't know which way to go(up and down the hall, up and down the hall). Please help us! We would be most grateful for any and every thing you can fund. Thanks for all you've done and continue to do.
