The 5th graders at my school are a great group of mathematicians!
However, to do their best calculating and problem solving, they sometimes need to be in a seat different from their school-issued chair.
These 5th graders are growing and changing, and a varied seating choice is essential to their growth as a learner. Kids this age are very active and need a way to focus their energy in the classroom.
My students come from all different backgrounds, but all come to school ready to work and do their best. Discovering how they each can learn best is an important life skill to acquire.
My Project
I am teaching math this year to approximately 70 fifth graders and am diving into flexible seating. I want to provide a more individualized learning environment for my students. During each class period, my students would have the opportunity to select a seating option in the room that will foster their academic success.
My students would be able to feel empowered if they had more choice over their working environment.
They also need to move. Flexible seating would allow my 5th graders to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which helps keep them more alert and focused. A variety of seating options encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, engaged, and productive.
