My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I want to create an environment that will not only lift them up to challenges but also support them all the way. These students need a variety of experiences, opportunities to move, and time to have structured social times. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.

My Project

One of the main responsibilities that I feel I have as a middle school teacher is motivating and engaging students with a variety of text. Students enjoy the many series on Netflix including the most recent Series of Unfortunate Events. My idea is to grab the momentum of this series to get my students started on an amazing series of books that build vocabulary and reading strategies such as drawing conclusions and inferencing! So my hope is to improve their comprehension and reading skills. These materials will make a difference in the learning of my students by putting quality literature in their hands that they will love.
