My students need 2 Apple iPad Pro tablets to field research and identify insects that aid in the pollination of our vegetable plants. They will then present their research by creating videos.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in an 'at risk school', my students are faced with challenges that no 8th grader should ever have to experience. I teach at a Title 1 middle school which is part of the District Reference Group H, the second lowest socioeconomic level a school can be placed in. 70% of our students receive, free or reduced lunch and many come from difficult home situations (broken homes, homeless, parent/s in jail, drug abuse etc.). Due to the challenges they deal with every day, many of my students often lack the motivation to attend or participate in class.
My goal in the classroom is to make sure they were having so much fun that they don't realize they are learning.
That's what Rick Riordan said and I've been striving to live by that motto! Despite having many disadvantages outside of the classroom, I find that my students are bright and capable and can achieve so much more if given the opportunity to learn in differing ways. Combining nature study with math is a sure fire way!
My Project
My students will need to use portable tablets to help them research the ways we can improve the pollination of our vegetable plants. In the past 2 years, we have created a vegetable garden in our school yard. Our harvest hasn't been too bountiful and we realized that we need to attract certain insects to help pollinate the flowers. They will use a botanical nomenclature app that would help identify the type of native plants and provide us the names of insects that will aid pollination, destroy the plant and increase our bounty. As Neil Armstrong said," Research is creating new knowledge".
The goal for completing these activities is for students to gain a better understanding of both interactions of insects within the ecosystem, and the impact they have on other organisms as well.
This will all be tied into our math unit on statistics, environmental science unit, which focuses on finding creative solutions to environmental issues such as a decline in bee populations as well as enabling my students to practice creating educational videos.
