This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach mathematics at a Title 1 school. Many of my students do not have the simple material things that I've been blessed to have throughout life, such as belts. Despite their financially constrained circumstances, the students at my school show up in the appropriate clothing with smiles on their faces. I love being the one to greet them daily as they get off the buses for breakfast and am thankful to be able to see every face that walks in every day.
My Project
The school district's dress code requires students to wear khaki shorts or pants with a belt in order to promote the professional attire they will one day wear in the workforce. Too often I ask students where their belt is and I get the response, "I don't own a belt." Hearing that makes me want to go to the store and buy up all the belts they have. Unfortunately on a teacher's salary, I cannot do that every year.
I'm thankful that DonorsChoose.org exists, and I know that many donors will support my attempt to make belts available for my students who cannot afford them.
