Mrs. Bourque from Hyde Park MA is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Where's Our Library? Books for Ravenous Readers

My students need a variety of books from levels I through N to use as a classroom library, such as Tell the Truth B.B. Wolf, Nate the Great, and Judy Moody.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

My Students

By the end of grade two I want my students to be able to say that they have had the opportunity to learn and thrive as readers in a literacy rich classroom. This year, my challenge in taking them through that exciting and amazing journey is that our new classroom come to us without a library.

The students that come to me this year will be second graders entering their first year in a turnaround school.

This means that due to prior years' stagnant growth this school has had a revamping of staff and administration. This school community has been in the 1st percentile statewide in our state. This means that out of all the schools in the state, the students have performed as well as, or better than only one other school. It is in a high poverty area with limited resources, and we are ready to give our students opportunities to learn and grow! The students are typical urban elementary school students. They come from a variety of ethnic, language and cultural backgrounds. Like all children, they are excited to be exposed to things that are normally a given in school: books, field trips, friends, and community. Our school community of families, parents, teachers and students is ready to turn this school into something amazing this year.

My Project

My students will use the books provided in this project daily in our classroom. They will buddy read, read independently with them, browse them, read them, and fall in love with their stories. I will design curriculum units with the three pigs stories where the students can compare and contrast the multiple versions and critically discuss the decisions the characters make. These books will be used as mentor texts to help develop my students as writers and allow them to re-imagine their literacy experiences. Most importantly, these books will be providing my students with a variety of reading levels to travel through on their second grade journey. As they improve as readers, this library allows them to go on to more and more challenging texts. With the help of these materials, by the end of grade two my students will be reading to learn, not just learning to read.

The books donated to this project will provide my new classroom with a library.

It will transform our school year from drab to fabulous. They won't be stuck re-reading the same few books over and over, but instead will be able to enjoy a wealth of new topics, stories, and ideas with friends in their classroom community.
