My students need to each have a copy of the novel in order to keep them engaged. Furthermore, I believe that reading along with me help their literacy development and foster positive life long reading habits.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a Title 1 school, most of my students are identified as at-risk and low income. My students enjoy books and want to be expert readers.
However, they become easily frustrated when they can't remember what they read.
Many struggle with comprehension because they lack background knowledge or schema. This schema is developed through their daily experiences. Unfortunately, the opportunity for these experiences are limited. Reading is a way for my students to build their schema. Reading takes them to places they never knew existed. I enjoy watching them journey into the pages of their books and walk in the shoes of the characters.
My Project
The class sets of novels I chose will be used to support my Units of Study for Teaching Reading. Using "Home of The Brave", students will be taught to read with interpretive lenses by studying story elements more closely.
Using "The Thief of Always", students will be taught to deal with complexity through multi-faceted characters, multiple plotlines, shifting timelines, tricky narratives structures, and complicated symbolism.
I believe these class novel stories will foster a sense of community as students experience the books together. Furthermore, encouraging academic and social inclusion as students share the ideas they grow about characters, plot, theme, etc.
