Where the Sidewalk Ends (and a Love of Poetry Begins)

My students need 30 children's poetry books to expose them to the wonderful world of verse.

My Students

"There is a place where the sidewalk ends And before the street begins, And there the grass grows soft and white, And there the sun burns crimson bright, And there the moon-bird rests from his flight To cool in the peppermint wind." ~Shel Silverstein And there students learn to love poetry...

Like students everywhere, my third-graders enjoy the rhythm and rhyme of songs and poetry.

Unlike students everywhere, my Native American students are growing up in one of the poorest and most isolated parts of the country. Our school library does not have a librarian, much less a well-stocked poetry section. Still, students' enthusiasm, intelligence, and kindness shine through.

My Project

I have grand hopes of exposing students to a wide range of poets and having students write lots of their own poetry, using published authors as mentors. In order to do this, however, we need more than 5 books in the poetry section of our classroom library. This project will introduce students to poetry greats such as Shel Silverstein, Jack Prelutsky, and Judith Viorst. It will give them verse about insects, books, Greek mythology, bedtime, and basketball (sure to be a favorite). It will help them build their fluency, hone their writing skills, and experience the beauty of the written word.

You have the opportunity to be the one to introduce my students to these poetic greats, to this wonderful verses, to a life filled with the flight and fancy of poetry.

Your donation to this project will help my students move beyond the beaten path to where the sidewalk ends...
