My Students

I have an amazing group of 6th grade students. These children don't always have what they need, and I am often looking for ways to gather resources to help them find success at school. My students face a variety of obstacles each day before they even arrive at my door.

My school is over 85% free and reduced price lunch.

Despite the obstacles that face our school, we strive to reach these students and create an environment that reaches each of these children. Our students have never backed down from a challenge and love to prove they can do something even when they are told how hard or impossible a task can be. I would love for us to create an accelerate blended classroom that will push my students even further.

My Project

I am constantly seeking creative ways to engage my students in the content area. Using young adult literature in my classroom is one way I create excitement about science. Many have found that using young adult literature in the content area engages students and provides them with a unique perspective on the science we are learning. My students relate to the characters in the book and soon find themselves wrapped up in the story while learning the science that is the setting of the events.

My students need 30 copies of the book Ashfall as a way to integrate literacy into our science classroom.

Using young adult literature will enable my students to connect to concepts and vocabulary that are embedded within a story format. This text in particular will bring to life the geoscience processes we will be studying as we look at Earth's systems. I hope to use the text to enhance my instruction and increase student understanding.
