Where On Earth Are We?

My students need two hand-held Global Positioning Systems (GPS) units to combine nature, life skills, and technology with geocaching fun.

At a rural, Title One school, students do not always think globally. As media specialist, I want to teach my elementary students tools to use to be able to find their way in the world, using traditional maps as well as the newest technology. Being rural, we have a wooded area behind our school that we are going to use as an outdoor classroom. There is a really interesting hobby called Geocaching. Individuals all over the world hide small waterproof caches along the highways and byways and download GPS coordinates along with clues to the Geocaching website. What fun! I would love to have our students connected to Planet Earth through this new technology. I need two handheld Global Positioning System units to use with smaller groups and also to encourage a little friendly competition. Of course, GPS coordinates to our cache sites would not be posted on the World Wide Web. Rather, we would share maps and GPS coordinates with students to enable them to find a cache. Once found students will sign the log inside the cache container. The entire experience would become a writing opportunity.
