Where Life Skills and Functional Learning Collide!
Help me give my students opportunities to learn transferable functional skills that will equip them for life after high school and become contributing members of society!
My students are incredible young brilliant minds with a vast amounts of abilities and talents waiting to be unleashed! Here at our school, my classroom is a cornucopia of personalities, abilities, and talents. In our classroom, we work on an array of functional life skills and academic lessons. We work hard on preparing each student for life after high school by focusing on challenging academic rigorous activities and skills that are transferable into the community and life after school is over.
Our school is a Title I high school and has over 80% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
The neighborhood has many low-income families. The school itself is widely diverse in population. The needs of our students are great and our funds are limited.
My Project
In order for our students to learn transferable skills they can take into the real world after high school, they need to have work that is differentiated and broken down into small tasks. These tasks are learning simple step work boxes, bagging groceries, household chores such as folding laundry, matching skills, counting skills, telling time, cleaning projects, puzzles and more. Puzzles and group tasks help students learn social skills and turn taking.
This project helps fund the essential tools and resources my classroom needs to transform into a dynamic learning environment where all students can learn functional life skills and succeed in many areas of life.
This is the foundation to which they will draw upon when they leave high school and find employment in their community.
