We are a charter school in rural northern California with a student body of 135, grades 6 through 12. We thrive on small class sizes with a low student to teacher ratio. We offer a rigorous academic education combined with a strong art program in visual and performing arts. We have committed teachers, eager students and supportive families. Our school's test scores are among the best in our county. We offer academic and career counseling for high school students and provide individual attention to students as they move from the school environment to their lives in the real world of higher education and/or occupations.
According to national surveys, knowledge of geography among Americans is limited. My students crave information about other places and other cultures. Maps and globes are visual representations of the world they live in. Access to up-to-date globes in each of classroom, social studies as well as English and science, would enhance awareness of geography across the curriculum.
If we had at least one globe in each classroom students would have ready access to viewing our planet. It would become second nature for them to check the location of physical and political areas they are studying. Creating the habit of looking up locations on a globe as the topic or interest arises will result a greater awareness of our world.
As we move into the 21st century, awareness of the world is essential to all our futures. Students are very interested in foreign countries, and instilling in them a greater knowledge of what is out there and what possibilities exist broaden their futures. As young people reach across borders, understanding and acceptance develops. We get one step closer to world peace. Students love globes and dreaming of the places they hope to visit or live or work. Let's make this resource accessible for them whether they are studying history or language or chemistry or art.
