My students need a world map to see a visual representation of the different areas represented in our song repertoire and pocket folders to hold their music.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Recently, I discovered that our students are the highest percentage of socio-economically/ at risk population within our school district. I was stunned. Yes, of course, the kids don't have the latest techno gadget but I had no idea.
My students are amazing.
My students are eager to learn. They love to have opportunities to experience new adventures and explore.
This is my second year at DES. Before last year, the students hadn't had the chance to play recorder or have a school choir. The former music teacher had two programs a school year. The kids hadn't had the chance to perform for their parents. They love performing for their parents! Music is the start of a journey that all the kids can take: drumming in Africa, singing games in Europe, dancing in Latin America! The possibilities are endless. A new discovery is available every single day!!
My Project
This year I want to focus on the many areas in the world that contribute to our art form! Music is the universal language and my students need to see that visually as a reminder.
As we sing and play music from all over the world, the students have chances to discover differences that make various cultures unique AND that there is more binding us together than dividing us!
Singing a song from China - playing instruments or a game - seeing China on the map and realising that a child there has hopes and dreams even as we do here. The children will be experiencing geography in a meaningful way, connecting the language, art, songs of the culture with the name on the map.
Another goal for the year is working on organisation. As an AVID campus, learning to organise our materials and time is important in preparing for college readiness. The folders will be solely for music instruction - recorder music, projects, compositions and program pieces.
