Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Where in the world is that?!" is a phrase that is often exclaimed by high school students when they are taught about countries in different parts of the world. One thing that has been challenging as a Global Studies teacher in New York City has not only been teaching the history of the world from the beginning of time to present day but also the incorporation of geography and maps while trying to do so. Location is a key concept when trying to get students to visualize the world and difficult to demonstrate without a good atlas or map. There is one wall map in the classroom in which I teach, but this is only a stepping point for teaching geography. Few classrooms have globes and even fewer classrooms have access to an atlas the students can hold. When I pull down the wall map, I want to laugh and cry at the same time because the students want to stand up so they can have a better view of the world. I am encouraged because students are interested but at the same time saddened because not everyone can "see the world" from their vantage point and some ultimately get lost. I would like to request a set of atlases for use in the classroom (40) as well as a set of almanacs (40) so students can answer the question, " Where is that?" and have the world (atlas) at their fingertips.
