I teach some of the most fabulous students in the world. They are between 16-20 years old and have failed to thrive in the traditional public school system. They have, despite personal and academic obstacles, decided to return to school and complete their high school education. I teach American and World history at an alternative high school on the northeast side of Chicago. Although we live in one of the most diverse and cosmopolitan cities in the world, my students have a very sheltered existence. They have had little exposure to Chicago, let alone to the world. Furthermore, some of my students cannot even locate where Chicago is on a map. While many of my students are bright and engaged, their academic knowledge is like swiss cheese. While this is something I can begin to address in a semester, it is not enough. My students need to be making up for lost time by engaging with maps on a regular basis. Wall maps, while an important tool, are not sufficient. It is for this reason that I am asking some fabulous donor to buy us laminated World and U.S. maps, as well as write and wipe markers. Being able to work with maps in this way utilizes kinesthetic as well as visual learning and allow me to make the most progress in the short amount of time that I have.
