Hailing from a multi-cultural school, my students represent 100 countries and 60 languages. P.S 131Q is also a title 1 school with over 58% of the children entitled to services. My first grade students are always curious about global issues. Due to the effects caused by the recent tsunami, they have become much more interested and empathetic in learning about their world. In order to expand their enthusiasm, I wish to implement a class project entitled "Where in the World is Your Family From?" For homework, children will do research, completing family surveys and interviews. Parents are also asked to volunteer their services, discussing holidays and traditions. Together we will share and study each other's countries, cultures, language and foods. To tie up our social studies theme, children create flags from their countries, which we pinpoint, along with their pictures, on a colorful map. Our bulletin board, "Where in the World is Your Family From?” is then displayed in the hall for all to admire. Although a map is an excellent social studies resource, I feel my students will benefit from a globe. With a globe, they can experience a more realistic, three-dimensional outlook of their world. Through this experience, the children will not only gain knowledge, but tolerance towards each other's cultural differences. Being a grade-leader, I will share this project with my first grade colleagues and their students. Therefore, I am requesting six large globes, which will be distributed among each first grade class (approximately 120 students). Thank you.
