This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I was shocked today when my students were unaware of the black panthers, the Gestapo, and Abraham Lincoln's role in the civil war. I realized I need to change this quickly!
My students have not paid attention in history class and instead of blaming them or their teachers I decided to put a stop to their lack of historical knowledge.
I have developed a unit that links historical fiction with nonfiction. Now I just need the books . Not to mention, my students have an extremely difficult time with informational text so I decided to pair my nonfiction unit with historical fiction so student's don't get bogged down in too much information!
My Project
I have requested a plethora of historical nonfiction books that my student can read along with informational texts that explain the time period they are reading about. I have a good amount of nonfiction resources, but I have also purchased some nonfiction texts that correspond with the historical fiction.
This project is so important because we cannot leave our youth uneducated about history.
We can't let a room full of African American students not know about the the black panthers and the civil rights movement. This is our history and everyone deserves an opportunity to learn about it and from it. Please give in order to make educated, informed students a reality and not just an ideal.
