Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in an urban low-income school, my students face many challenges outside of the classroom. Despite these challenges, they are hard working, determined, and inquiring group of students. I am requesting funding to enhance my unit on Insects by turning my second graders into budding entomologists!
As a an urban science teacher I often see my students struggling to make real world connections to the content due to lack of opportunities they have outside of school.
Unfortunately, families in our school do not have the resources to supply these learning opportunities for my students. This lack of opportunity makes it difficult to create those real world connections. By supplementing my curriculum with as much hands-on materials as possible I am giving my students those real life connections that they need to be successful in their academics and future experiences.
My Project
My pre-K students will learn about animals from various habitats. I want them to be exposed to both habitats near and far with actual specimen to help facilitate their learning. Students will also learn that all animals are living things and to have compassion towards them.
By providing these materials students will have hands-on manipulatives to learn about the animals and to be compassionate towards the needs of various animals.
Students will use the matching cards to test their knowledge on which habitat the animals they learned about live in. Without these materials and showing actual animals teaching compassion is more difficult for this young age group.
