This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are a brand new 3rd grade class created in a low-income area of Brooklyn new york to help reduce classroom overcrowding. Unfortunately, the school was not able to purchase everything we need for the year. I have done my best to stock up the classroom, but bookshelves are out of my budget.
We are highly energetic, excited, engaged, and entertaining third graders!
Though we come from challenging backgrounds and many of our homes are unstable, we LOVE learning and are beginning to love reading, too! Our school is a public school housed in a VERY old building--we share the building with 2 other public schools, too.
My Project
Right now, I have a small media shelf that was donated by may parents for a couple of book buckets, but the rest of our books are in buckets lining the floor. We would love for bookshelves to store our books on! The school doesn't have a library, so our classroom library is really the only place we have to find and store books.
Though it may seem trivial, having a classroom library is vital to the day-in day-out operation of a classroom.
Reading is the key to educational success, and I want my students to see that our classroom library is made for THEM (and accessible)!
