Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a small school in south Texas. My students, for the most part, are low socioeconomically disadvantaged. Culturally my students are from many backgrounds. I even have a student who recently immigrated from Cuba and has become an American citizen. Most of my students struggle on a daily basis to balance school, home, and work schedules.
Our school recently suffered from Hurricane Harvey's devastation and many students are still homeless or living in dilapidated housing.
Fortunately, they are hard working and tenacious. Their ability to bounce back and overcome from this traumatic chain of events truly makes them heroes in my mind and in my heart.
My Project
Knowing more about what's going on in the world around them and understanding how it connects to my students' lives will help them become more global citizens. By reading current event articles about things that are happening right now in their world, they will be more likely to succeed and become resourceful contributors to their society. It is important for them to understand where they fit in society and to be able to eloquently discuss their opinions and articulate their own ideas. When we build upon their world view and schema they are able to successfully navigate toward their future endeavors and goals.
