The cost of admission to a workshop on tropical rainforests at the Bronx Botanical Gardens for eighteen students and seven teachers is $187, including <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
I am a teacher of the deaf and hard-of-hearing in a self-contained fifth- and sixth-grade classroom in the Bronx. Ninety-five percent of my students are eligible for free lunches. Deaf and hard-of-hearing children have great difficulty with oral and written language and therefore learn best in a visual, multi-sensory environment. I would like to take my visually oriented, very curious children to the Bronx Botanical Gardens to see for themselves where chocolate and vanilla come from (tropical plants) and to taste hot chocolate as it was originally made by the Aztec Indians of Mexico. This is a multi-sensory workshop that would be wonderful for them, since we will be concurrently studying the western hemisphere, including tropical climates, the Aztec Indians, and life science. Please help me to take them on this great learning trip that is also a lot of fun. They will be so happy to go!
