Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a rural inner city school with a high percentage of lunch reduce students. Most of our population is of immigrant background second language learners. My students are high school level with limited exposure and understanding of science and technology related instrumentation
Recently my classroom was awarded a seismograph to record earthquake activity in the world. Part of the opportunity of having a seismograph is the ability to broadcast the instrument readings online. Currently the instrument is running out of a computer that serves many functions in the classroom and are in need of a dedicated and undisturbed computer to run the instrument. The students like looking everyday to see if we recorded an earthquake but they cant do that at times because the computer is being used for other activities.
To enhance the learning of my students in earth science concepts a desktop and a monitor are needed. This equipment will enable my students to look at earthquake data and relate the findings to other earth related concepts. My students will also be able to share the recordings with the rest of the science and non science community online. Having a spot in the cyber world will boost my students' ego and desire to learn more about science and pursue science degrees in the future.

Having something they feel they own will raise their self esteem and desire to come to class to see what has happened in the world and share their findings with their close and no so close neighbors.
