Where Did My Books Go?

My students need the 30 book bags to keep their reading books handy and easy to transport from school to home. They need the paint to personalize their bag.

My Students

We all enjoy reading our favorite books and sharing them with our classmates. We also like everyone to know what kind of person we are through our words and artwork. What better way to fuse both by having a tote bag that is personalized to carry our books around?

We are a dual language immersion school with an 80% Latino school population.

Our students bring all of their background knowledge from their varying cultures to create an atmosphere of caring and love as well as a respect of our diverse cultural heritages. We seek to assist our student' growth in becoming bilingual and bi-literate members of a global community through an authentic and culturally diverse curriculum.

My Project

My incoming students will decorate their canvas bags so that they can then keep what books they choose from our classroom or school library. By doing so, they will first have somewhere to keep their reading books handy and organized so they are readily available for them at any given time during the school day. It is my hope that this will entice them to read more and grow as a reader throughout the school year. Aside from helping them to grow as readers, they will also have the opportunity to use their imagination and creativity to decorate a solid canvas bag that they will be able to keep as long as the bag lasts, taking them home at the end of the school year. This way I hope that they will treasure not only the bag but the books that the bag will hold.

Donations for this particular project will help my students to understand that they have a voice through their artwork and that books are meant to be treasured and taken care of.

The bag, and the books they put in it, are a reflection of the person they are. I believe that it will help them to all realize that they are readers regardless of their ability and backgrounds.
