Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing! I work at a very diverse school with high poverty (Title I). Most of my students are minorities from many different places, so many of our students have difficult situations and go through much more than they should have to at their young age. We work hard to make all students feel safe and to enjoy school. Last year, they were fascinated with what they learned in Social Studies and had an amazing perspective on comparing historical events to events of today. They did a wonderful job of keeping very professional looking notes to help them remember and keep tract of all the places we studied.
I've mostly taught ELA and last year was switched to 6th Grade Social Studies.
We cover Pre-History to the Renaissance. I have one globe that I found, and my students loved finding the places we were studying on the globe. I think it would be wonderful to have more globes, a large map, and posters of Ancient Civilizations. I'd love to have plants and decorations to depict an area. I've dressed like Cleopatra, as well as during the Renaissance era and the kids love to see what the past was like.
My Project
I'd like my classroom to have interesting visuals such as globes, maps and plants. I have one globe and students loved finding the area that we were studying and comparing ancient maps to the globe. Having more and different ones for students to look at will engage and help them. I also put in primary documents because these are hands on too, and students can reference the area. A large world map will help us keep track of where we've been. Colored Sharpies are a tool kids love for note taking and Expo Markers for anchoring their understanding through writing
