My Students

Our school has a unique population of students. We are a Title I school located in a rural community. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of our students also receive meals in backpacks that go home on Friday to ensure that they have access to meals while they are not at school. Over the long breaks, children in our community can continue to receive meals at the local community center. In addition to the financial struggles faced by the students in our community, 24% of our students are ESE. We also encompass an Emotional-Behavior Disorder Unit. Some of our students are homeless and live in shelters. Other students have been removed from their homes and are now wards of the state, living in a group home, unable to have further contact with their parent(s). Many of our students do not have access to technology at home. Many of our students did not have access to toys to promote the development of fine motor skills, gross motor skills, or social skills. It is critical that our students receive access to tools to develop each of these skills.

My Project

Our shelf doesn't hold our materials because it is broken. Materials need to be carefully balanced (in a way that kindergartners aren't developmentally ready to do) or the shelf pops and materials fall and/or pop towards students.

We don't have a safe place to store our learning materials and, especially with COVID protocols, materials need to be properly cleaned and stored.

The shelf has popped so many times and fallen, I just turned it around to face the wall to keep everyone safe. That means our materials are stacked on the floor, often tripped over, stepped on, or accidentally kicked since wearing masks diminishes the bottom peripheral vision.
