This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students in my school are resilient learners who are eager to explore the world. Unfortunately, not only does our Title 1 school struggle under the "failing school" label and the bias and low-expectations that breeds, it also is perpetually underfunded and understaffed. Combined, these circumstances leave many critical educational opportunities unavailable to my students. Despite having limited access to enriching experiences and materials, students here refuse to be defeated and keep giving their best, day in and day out.
With the help of the generous donors of DonorsChoose, I hope to build a classroom that tells my students that they matter, that their education matters, and that their futures matter.
My Project
One of the major reasons students at the high school level become disengaged with school is because classroom environments are not set up to build a sense of community and collaboration. Instead, students often work independently because individual desks and classroom layouts just make independent work the easiest option.
By creating collaboration centers by adding tables to my classroom, I hope that disengaged students will become learners whose relationships with other students push them to work together to do their best.
Additionally, these cooperative learning centers will more closely replicate “real-world” working ennvironments. Practicing working as a group with a common purpose in a shared space will help students connect the skills that they are learning in class to their future endevours.
Through this project, I wish to have my most disengaged students- those who are failing multiple classes due to absences or effort- feel excited to join a team of learners who depend on them and their contributions.
