My students need 3 sets of books, both fiction and nonfiction, at the first and second grade reading levels to encourage them to become successful readers.
T.V. and video games are a major component of life and often the only source of entertainment children seek. It is my goal as school librarian to foster a love of literature in the hearts of my students. At such a young age, many have not yet discovered that books can also capture their imagination!
My 700 students are the youngest and most energetic ranging in age from Pre-kindergarten 3 year olds to 8 year old second graders.
They are enthusiastic learners and eager to show off new skills. Our school is in a developing rural community which is constantly growing. With the growth of the student population, it is important to me to be able to provide all of my students with interesting stories and amazing informational books that will inspire and encourage them to become independent readers. There is a current need at my school for additional books so that every child can start their day reading!
My Project
By providing a variety of on level books, both fiction and nonfiction, the students at our school will be able to choose a book that meets their interests and motivates them to want to read. The books will be used in conjunction with the computer based Accelerated Reader (A.R.) program through Renaissance Learning. The students will be able to read their books and show off what they know about their books, through the A.R. website. When they read these books, they will earn points and be awarded with prizes as they meet their reading goals. The more these beginning readers read, the better readers they will become. They will develop into confident readers with strong comprehension skills. Developing these skills will allow my students to succeed in the regular classroom not only in their reading classes, but across the entire curriculum of study. These books will help build the foundation of the educational success of so many young people!
