My Students

My Salt Lake City students are part of the AVID program - a nonprofit college-readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. AVID places special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills. Most of my AVID students will be the first in their families to attend college. Many of my students come from immigrant families and are bilingual. All of my AVID students are exceptional students and people. They are absolutely determined to challenge themselves throughout high school to meet their goals of attending and graduating college. They take at least two honors courses each semester, participate in extracurriculars and and serve their communities. My AVID students want to use their academic and intellectual intelligence to become doctors, professors, lawyers and computer scientists to ultimately improve the world.

My Project

All of these projects will be used to help students learn skills necessary for college - with the focus being on student collaboration and organization. For example, the whiteboard markers will be used to present their academic questions to each other. The sharpies and markers will be used to create projects to practice research and public speaking. The post it notes will be used to practice annotation skills. The Pac-12 banners will be hung on the walls to inspire students. The activities, such as legos, will be used for activities for students to do hands on learning and to have fun together to build classroom community.
