I teach first grade in a South Carolina elementary school. Currently I have seventeen students in my class, but if funded this project would have a lasting effect on all of my future first graders. Reading is essential. To promote a love of reading and parent involvement, I would like to purchase two sets of the "We Both Read" books. Each set contains thirty-one titles from kindergarten to second grade level. These books are unique in that they are arranged so the parent reads the left side of the page and the child reads the right side of the page. This combines two important components of learning to read: modeling and practicing. Each week students would take home a "When 'We Both Read' I Succeed" bag. The bag would contain a book, a letter of explanation and a feedback form. For each book I would develop an activity to follow the reading such as find fifteen adjectives in the book and write them in your homework folder. Students would be encouraged to choose a special reading spot with their parents such as a porch swing, easy chair or bed. The feedback form is important so parents can let me know if the reading and/or activity was easy, just right or too hard for their child. The parents would also be able to suggest other activities they might have enjoyed doing in response to the book. These forms are essential in helping the program grow and improve. I loved reading as a child and want to do all I can to help my students be successful readers and enjoy the process. These books will provide the students with a unique, interactive reading experience with their parents. I am also hoping to be able to recruit some volunteers that can come to school and mentor any children that do not have someone to read with at home. Thank you for your consideration of my project.
