My students are 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who are creative, intelligent, and unique. They are learning to be responsible adults who contribute to society. They are our future.
My students are also students who have the greatest need for behavior support in our building.
My Behavior Support Classroom is designed to provide support and skills to students with the greatest behavioral, social, and emotional needs in the building. Some students need this program for their whole school day and some only need access for a period.
My Project
My Behavior Support Classroom serves the students with the largest emotional and behavioral needs in our school. Many of them have experienced trauma that has affected their brains.
When someone is upset or in crisis, the Amygdala part of their brain takes over; the Amygdala is responsible for our fight or flight response.
It is very hard to get out of "Amygdala Thinking" and switch in to "Logical, Pre-frontal Cortex Thinking". To do this, the brain needs oxygen. This is where the mints and suckers come in.
When students are in crisis they need to breath so that their brains can get oxygen. When you give them a mint or sucker, they suck on it, which causes the natural response to inhale. Once you can get a student breathing, you can rationalize with them and work on solving the situation at hand.
