It seems as if life for a typical elementary student is much more complicated than it was when I was growing up. Issues such as low self-esteem, family changes, attention difficulties, anxiety, and bullying can make it difficult for students to thrive in the academic environment.
My students and my school are wonderfully unique.
We are a small public school and could be considered a suburban school. However, our families run the gamut of socio-economic levels, ethnicities, and abilities. We also are home to an autism center. Because of our diversity, I think our students are learning to be tolerant and accepting young people.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of workbooks and games that will be utilized directly by the students. Many of our students have ADHD and different levels of difficulties focusing. The ADHD Workbook and Focus Game will serve as tools for those students to develop better attention skill and organizational competencies that they will need as they grow up.
Difficulty developing and maintaining friendships are problems that face many young people. Fortunately, those skills can be learned. The Social Skills Workbook and Don't Pick On Me will undoubtedly help my students learn these skills. I am also requesting Girls In Real Life Situations, which is a curriculum for a girls' group to help enhance social and emotional development. I would use this to work with groups of young ladies to prevent some of the "girl drama" that has been happening with our 4th and 5th grade young ladies.
As the school counselor, I have contact with all 607 students at my school.
Many of these students face challenges that we cannot even imagine. Learning skills to cope with these problems is essential for academic and personal development. Having up-to-date and comprehensive materials is vital. It is very difficult to learn math without a math book, just as it is for students to learn personal and social skills without appropriate resources.
