Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Just like the rest of us, my students are feeing the impact of the COVID-19 coronavirus. Our school routines have been completely transformed these past few weeks. No longer can they count on seeing me and their classmates everyday, or plan on collaborating with each other to do original group work. Whereas before I could count on more experienced students to support their classmates in their learning, now I am struggling just to make sure that students can access their work from home.

The inequity of the pandemic shutdown is glaringly impacting my students more than most.

Most of my students families are in the service or construction sectors, jobs that were lost almost immediately. Things were tight for these families before the coronavirus, but now many of my students and their families are not sure how they will afford food next week. In spite of all of these challenges, they want to keep learning, but many can't because they don't regularly have access to a computer at home.

My Project

I want to make sure that no matter what happens with the coronavirus going forward that I can make sure every student has a functional computer at home. Even when we are not in an economic and societal shutdown, it's imperative that students regularly can use a computer at home to access online content, do research, or type their work.

I am asking for 10 Chromebooks for 10 students in need.

Each year, I want to give a Chromebook to the neediest students that they can keep. It's that simple. In our society technological literacy is a key to opportunity, and now in this time of crisis a computer is an essential need to access any education at all. I want to make sure that even if there is never another situation like this pandemic that I can provide laptops that will empower my neediest students and flatten the curve of disparity between them and their more affluent peers.
