Do you remember a book that you read in fourth grade? I remember one of my favorites -- Lemonade War. It is funny and easy to connect to and a perfect way to engage students in a book as they come back to school! They will be thrilled with the final activity - setting up a classroom lemonade stand!
The students in my school come from low income families.
I often provide school supplies, lunch, book bags, socks and sometimes clothing. At the beginning of each school year, I do home visits so that the students can see their parents and I are a team cheering them on. I love to see their homes and show them I care about them inside and outside of school. Our school is very diverse and we have fairly large classroom sizes. They are all good kids who need engaging activities to ignite their little fires! I love to provide that for them with creative, unique approaches to learning. It is always a thrill to watch their eyes light up when something "clicks" or how grateful they can be for fun activities.
My Project
I am asking for a classroom set of the book, Lemonade War. I think it is important that the students are able to hold books in their hands and to be able to go back into the book to build their comprehension. This book is suitable for a variety of reading levels and will engage a diverse population - making it perfect to read together as a class. It is a great topic to connect all the students - do you remember setting up a lemonade stand? After we have read the book I will have the students create a business plan to set up their own lemonade stand for other fourth grade classrooms. This will help the students to work together with their new classmates on a common, exciting goal! They will use the strategies, marketing terms and lessons learned from the book. This should be a great start to reading and how exciting a book can be!
My school does not have any current classroom sets of books.
There is so much importance and value in simply holding a book. The students at my school most likely have few, if any, chapter books of their own at home. This set of books would be a wonderful start to our school year. I will also happily allow other fourth grade teachers to read the book with their class as well!
