Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach about 50 fourth graders Math and Science in an urban neighborhood. This diverse group of learners includes general ed., gifted, and inclusions students.

I love that my students are eager to learn new concepts and get just as excited about Math and Science as I do.

They all have such a wide range of abilities: some are great at using their social skills to encourage their peers, while others demonstrate excellent leadership skills by having integrity and making the right choices all the time. One special quality about my students is that they are always willing to work together. When they are given group assignments and activities they surprise me with the way they are able to gather ideas and use their individual abilities to contribute to the group. A super creative bunch of students!

My Project

The standing desk will give my students, who have a difficult time sitting, an opportunity to stand, burn extra energy, and still be able to focus on their learning.

When student's needs are met, it makes for a more nurturing learning environment.

Students will feel comfortable using the standing desk during special science investigations, as well as, their normal day to day learning.

At times it becomes a challenge for students to be comfortable in traditional students desks. They often kneel in their seats or arrange themselves in a way that makes it hard for other students to see...the standing desk will be set up in an area where students feel confident using it as well as comfortable.
