Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are part of an under-represented portion of Houston schools where diversity and inclusion are major points of contention. Our budding theatre program is one area where my students can fully express themselves and engage juicy texts that propel their social-emotional growth. Watching them dive headfirst into projects that ignite their passion is truly inspiring to myself and others who get the opportunity to witness them in action.
For many of my students, Theatre Arts is a key that will continue to unlock limitless doors of opportunity for the rest of their lives.
As satisfying as it is watching my students utilize what little resources we have, it is even more fulfilling when they are given the freedom to excel in projects of their choosing. Most of the students that I teach do not have access to dramatic texts or theatre in general. Still, they are persistent and voracious readers who manage to bring forth the necessary materials from wherever they can. They are truly an inspiration and continue to remind me every day what it means to be a lifelong learner!
My Project
The script library is a place in my Theatre Arts classroom that I have longed to create. Last year, my students didn't even have an actual classroom; we were subject to the hot, dusty, and garage-like metal shop. This year, we actually have a real theatre classroom, but the only thing missing is a selection of plays that we can read together as a class. In the past, I used photocopies and projected what I could, but there is nothing like being able to hold a real paperback copy of a script and perform it out loud with your peers. The plays I selected have all been chosen with my students in mind. I am grateful that my students have taken a liking to a lot of classics and with this script library they will finally be able to explore them as an ensemble.

As our school continues to increase efforts in English speaking, reading, writing, and listening, it is paramount that they have an effective drama program that can provide them opportunities to do all of those things. From acting as their favorite Shakespearean villains to deciphering detailed stage directions they will explore numerous areas of literacy. My students have shown they are hungry for more dramatic texts and now with this project I hope we can begin to satiate their craving for more.
