Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have grit! Character. Spirit. Perseverance. Passion.
Everyone has a story.
My students may only be 9, 10 and 11, but they already have a lifetime worth of stories to tell. It is my job to provide them with the tools to help them refine their storytelling.
I am one of the lucky people who enjoy going to work every day, so I am happy to be part of the 99%. My students are free spirits and are sponges waiting to soak everything up. They attend school in a densely populated part of the city.
My Project
Like many of us, my students need all the help they can get.
Research has clearly demonstrated that having a healthy body is worth its value in gold in terms of that translating to a healthy mind.
Many are thriving regardless of how little they have while others need all the extra support we can send in their direction.
Because my 5th graders range in academic and physical abilities, I am constantly trying to find ways to scaffold lessons and cater to their varied learning modalities and needs while making sure they have all the skills and are challenged to think critically and creatively like their counterparts who live in more affluent communities. We all live by John Wooden's motto. "Don't let what you can't do stop you from doing what you can."
With the acquisition of these sports supplies, I will be able to engage my students in a series of highly energized circuit training and obstacle course play when we meet as an after-school Soccer Team. We will be doing dribbling drills and can play full court soccer.
We will provide a venue for the students to let out all of their pent-up energy on the blacktop. After engaging in a series of warm-up exercises, the students will get into teams to crawl through tunnels, roll through cones, dig through plastic balls, and other obstacle courses thanks to materials we've previously acquired through Donors Choose. We will begin with teacher-created obstacle challenges. As the students get acclimated with the materials and the intentions, they will then create their own circuit training exercises to strengthen their core and then create obstacle challenges for themselves and their classmates. Every single student will be active, engaged, and getting physically fit.
