My Students

What did you want to be when you grew up? An astronaut? A doctor? A zookeeper? When you played with your friends, were you a princess? A pirate? Did you know that while you were playing, you were also learning? Children learn through play!

My students are preschool-aged military children who have a variety of special needs.

However, despite what they may be dealing with- a recent move, a disability, the deployment of a parent- they come to school excited to learn and play. As children of military families, some of my students may have already moved several times in their young lives. New experiences and new environments can be overwhelming.

My Project

The dramatic play center can help create a sense of familiarity for my students. It can also be a way to start building friendships as they learn to share, cooperate, negotiate and participate in a conversation. Through dramatic play, children start to develop empathy as they learn about how others live, think, and feel. They gain critical thinking skills as they learn about symbolism, representational thought, and problem solving.

In this project, I am requesting materials to create units that will go along with some of our learning themes.

This project will be used at the beginning of our school year as we learn about families and the roles that we play as part of a family.
