Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

What do you want to be when you grow up? This is the question I ask students every year. " I want to be a police officer!" This is the response I get year after year. Through role play my students would gain knowledge of other careers. As a kindergarten teacher in a low income school I would like to engage my students in a fun activity about community workers for social studies. Many of my students would enjoy dressing up and playing the role of a community worker. After watching the video on "What I want to be" I would then have a group discussion. During the group discussion I would use the small figures of pretend professionals and ask about that worker's role. The student who answers may wear that worker's costume and role play. Then, I would have students draw and write a sentence about a community worker. As students finish they may go to the center and use the costumes. The costumes would be used for role play in a formal lesson and for informal use in a center. Students will be able to enjoy how they look in the mirror. I feel that after exposing my students to other professions I will have a more diverse answer based on their new experiences.
