My students are 6th graders who have just left the confines of their tiny elementary school to join the sprawling campus of the middle-high school which houses students in grades six through twelve. They are small fish in a big pond.
They are eager to learn and excited for all that the middle-high school has to offer.
Some of them come from challenging backgrounds, but they do not let that dampen their enthusiasm for learning.
They are hard-working and want to learn as much as they can about the world around them and the people in it.
As my students transition from elementary to middle-high school, we (their team of teachers) have decided to make "KINDNESS" our mantra this year. To this end, I have decided to begin the school year with the novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio.
I believe the message in this book will resonate with our students as we strive to not only improve them academically, but help turn them into kind human beings, and productive citizens.
We are requesting 21 copies of Wonder with a movie tie-in edition as well.
Reading this book, discussing its concepts (and perhaps comparing it to the movie afterwards) will give my students an opportunity to reflect upon how we treat people in this world and the importance of being kind to one another, as well as ourselves.
