When Do You Use a Calculator? Only on Special Equations...
Help me give my students calculators to measure the rates of seafloor spreading, erosion, deposition, and other natural processes. Also, to help them explore and manipulate formulas as they learn about Newtonian physics.
My students are creative, active, and eager to learn. As a science teacher, I love hearing their comments and questions when they work hands-on with materials during lab explorations. There is nothing more perfect than watching a student wrestle with a concept as they develop a design, make observations, or work with a peer. They show up each day with a positive attitude and willingness to broaden their understanding of the natural world.
As a geoscience teacher, my goal is to help students build a perspective on the world around them.
To do this, we observe and manipulate samples of minerals, rocks, water, soils, and living things. We build models of tectonic plate movement and measure the spreading rate of the seafloor. The world we live in is constantly changing. We affect it, and it affects us. My students work each day to question these natural processes and develop an understanding of their home: planet Earth.
My Project
These calculators will greatly aid the many math and science explorations that my students will engage in throughout the year. Our school is classified as a low-income school where students often do not have access to the supplies that are crucial for learning science.
As a geology teacher, my students grapple with the processes of the natural world around them.
With limited supplies, they struggle to understand the scale at which these processes occur. There are many formulas and calculations that assist in developing a perspective on the Earth's various systems.
I also teach Physical Science which has a large emphasis on Newtonian physics and the manipulation of equations. Without calculators, we struggle to work through more complex problems.
